‘Representing Sport: Europe, Tradition and Modernity' will be held in the Huston School of Film and Digital Media, at the National University of Ireland, Galway, on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd June 2009. This International Symposium is supported by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), NUI, Galway's Millennium Fund, and the Department of French, NUI, Galway.
The symposium will include seven substantive presentations by invited speakers, with shorter contextual presentations by the two organisers, Dr. Philip Dine and Dr. Seán Crosson, as well as a special Inmarsatlecture, 'Broadcasting the Volvo Ocean Race', to mark the arrival in Galway of the Volvo Ocean Race by those involved in the filming of the event. The 2008-09 race is the first in its 35-year history to have videographers onboard sending back high-definition television and rich multimedia content. Ian Walker, skipper of Irish vessel Green Dragon, will be joined by media crew members from PUMA (Rick Deppe), ERICSSON (Guy Salter) and TELFONICA (Gabriele Olivo) to talk about reporting the race to two billion followers.
