18 Apr, 2006
Join us April 18–23, 2006 at historic Abbeyglen Castle, Clifden, Co. Galway overlooking the wind-whipped Atlantic, for the Ireland Writing Salon.

IRELAND WORKSHOPS
Twice a day we will gather for a two-hour workshop, during which we will explore various aspects of the writing process. Workshops will be discussion-based, incorporating exercises both alone and in groups. Each workshop is designed to be useful to writers of all disciplines.

TELLING YOUR OWN STORY (James Navé and Allegra Huston) Whether in poetry, fiction, or memoir, most writers begin with their own story. Understand the power and the pitfalls, learn how to create a literary artifact from the raw experience of life.

SCREENWRITING (Allegra Huston) An overview of structure, character, theme, and dialogue; shorts and feature films; genre and arthouse. And an insight into how, and what, films actually get made.

WORD SAFARI (James Navé) Using a combination of movement, brainstorming, and improvisation, you’ll discover ways to energize your writing process by mining imagination, humor, and emotion.

CHARACTER (Allegra Huston) What makes a character live on the page? Explore how to create strong, individual characters through exercises that will flex your imagination and expand your range of empathy.

USING YOUR CRITICAL MIND (Allegra Huston) You’ve written something, but is it any good? Learn useful techniques for incorporating the critical demands of revision into your first draft, to shape and strengthen your writing.

PRESENTING YOUR WORK (James Navé) How do you capture an audience? Develop your own presentational and performance style by connecting spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually with your work.

THE POETRY SALON (James Navé) Over the last twenty years, poetry has expanded beyond the exclusive circles of the academic elite, and found an edgier, more adventurous voice. Today the world of poetry makes room for all. In this workshop, you'll learn how how, regardless of your level of skill or experience, you can become a part of the growing poetry community.

CREATIVITY AS AN ALTERED STATE: PARTS 1 & 2 (Gladys Swan) Through a series of relaxation and drawing exercises this workshop will show you how to explore lucid dreaming as a source for images of place and personal meaning.

OPENING UP INNER SPACES PART 1 & 2 (Leslie Ullman) This workshop will employ sound, visual prompts, and free association to help you flex writing muscles that will take you deeper into the inner spaces of your work..

Salon fee EUR 1200 $1475.00 US (early registration $1425) Includes includes tuition, materials, five nights' lodging, all meals.
